- Leatherman Multi-tools and Knives -
Leatherman tools were created by Tim Leatherman. In 1987 he went to Europe with his wife. This trip to Europe left his wanting more tools than his boy-scout knife; he had a dream of a multi-tool. In 1976 he went through several prototypes with cardboard and wood. The first steel prototype is made the next year with a little teaching about metal working from his brother-in-law.
Tim then applies for a US Patent on his multi-tool prototype, “Mr. Crunch”, and receives Patent 4,238,862. He never gets any business offers for his patent and Tim and his new business partner, Steve Berliner, convince his father to lease them some space in his machine shop.
In 1983, the fine-tuned Pocket Survival tool is born. Tool and knife companies do not like the idea of his tool, but Cabela’s and Early Winters place a small order from for his tool in their holiday catalogs. Leatherman Tool Group incorporates in July of that year.
1984 was Leatherman’s first star year. Early winters doubles their order to 500, and then a week later order 750 more. Two weeks later they order 1,000. Leatherman’s sale goal for 1984 was to sell 4,000 tools. They sold almost 30,000! Since then their business has been booming, and they have been expanding. They have come out with dozens of tools, and many innovative ones. Tim Leatherman has been a driving force for the Leatherman Tool Company for 25 years.
Who wants to carry around an entire array of tools with them at all times? Leatherman multitools give you the ability to keep your tool on your belt. It is later than a Swiss Army Knife, but with the same benefits. There are many different Leatherman multitools with different attachments. |
